The Artist and Model 1990-Present

The image of, and the relationship between, the artist (usually male) and the model (usually female) has often been controversial. I am interested in the many meanings of this long and problematic relationship. The metaphoric and symbolic nature of the artist drawing the model is the latest iteration of subjects I have been pursuing since the 1980s. This series focuses on this complex dynamic through theory, practice, critical thinking about the role of art and artists, social history, art history and power structures in culture.

In this project, I reflect on certain aspects of historic and contemporary art relative to the theme of the artist and model. Greek mythology often equates the story of young lovers tracing each other’s profile on a wall with the origins of art. Another issue, arising from Christian symbolism, is the relationship between the frame around the (Romantic) ‘view through the window’, the cross and the grid as symbols of the transition between the profane and spiritual consciousness. The image of the model, appropriated from an art school advertisement, can be interpreted as pornographic. While considering the psychological relationship between the artist and model, this project examines links between fine art, advertising, pornography, the male gaze, popular culture, propaganda and capitalism.
